Prospective Students
Kirkwood offers a very diverse music program, intended to support both the music major and the non-music major. Students can select from a variety of opportunities to suit their interest, plus receive a scholarship for participating in music ensembles.
Two of Kirkwood's vocal ensembles, Jazz Transit and RSVP, have been recognized for their high standards of performance, and have received national and international acclaim. They have presented themselves as two of the premier vocal jazz ensembles in the country, and have showcased their talent in places such as France, Austria, Czech Republic and The Netherlands.
Through their participation in the vocal jazz program, students have the opportunity to work with internationally recognized jazz educators and performing artists.
In addition to the two jazz ensembles, students may also participate in Concert Chorale, an auditioned, mixed chorus of 40 to 60 members who perform in several concerts each year. Members of Concert Chorale receive one credit hour for the course, and are graded on their class participation. The ensemble performs a variety of music from differing historical periods, contemporary choral literature, music of world cultures and music from the broadway stage. Auditions for Concert Chorale are held during the first week of every semester, and are very straight forward, low key and informal.
Private voice lessons are also available for students who may have never had the opportunity to develop their voice. The one or two credit hour lessons allow students of any level to receive one-on-one coaching with an accredited instructor. The same is also true for piano instruction.
