
Jazz Transit
"Jazz Transit" is one of two vocal jazz ensembles at Kirkwood Community College. The eight voice, acappella ensemble performs an extremely wide variety of styles including jazz standards, rhythm and blues, Latin, and contemporary acappella, inspired by such artists as "The Real Group", "The Manhattan Transfer", "The New York Voices", "Lambert Hendricks and Ross", "The Swingle Singers", "Vox One", "Take Six", "Earth Wind and Fire", and "Stevie Wonder".
In 1999, "Jazz Transit" was the first group in the history of Kirkwood Community College to be selected to perform for the International Conference of the International Association of Jazz Educators. In January of 2001, "Jazz Transit" was again selected to perform for the 28th Annual Conference of the International Association of Jazz Educators. In July of 2001, Jazz Transit performed in Brussels and Paris, completing their European tour with a performance at the North Sea Jazz Festival. In February of 2002, "Jazz Transit" was invited to again perform at the North Sea Jazz Festival, one of the largest and most prestigious jazz festivals in the world. During the summer of 2003, "Jazz Transit" performed at "Jazzfest Wien", in Vienna, Austria, "Jazz a Vienne", in Vienne, France and was invited to the legendary Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. In June of 2006, "Jazz Transit" performed at the Mezinárodní Festival Akademických Sboru (IFAS) (International Festival of Academic Choirs) in Pardubice, Czech Republic. "Jazz Transit" was the first jazz choir invited to this gathering of international choirs in the thirty eight year history of the event, and was awarded a Gold Medal for their performance.
"Jazz Transit" has performed widely in the Midwest including guest appearances for the North Central American Choral Directors Conference, the Minnesota Choral Directors Association, the Iowa Choral Directors Association, the Illinois State University Vocal Jazz Festival. Additional performances include jazz festivals at Morningside College, Southwestern Community College, the University of Northern Colorado, Western Michigan University, and the Mexico City Jazz Festival.
